Today was mainly spent looking at the Volcano for the Kilauea eruption.  We headed over to where the lava was flowing into the ocean to see the steam.  On the way, we stopped at the Lava Tree State Park.  We then got lost trying to find where to go to view the steam near Kalapana, but we finally got there.



I wanted to see some lava, but we were no allowed to get close enough. Day 7 was mainly a day of rest even though we woke up early so we could get some breakfast and head to the airport with plenty of time to hop over to the island of Hawaii, aka the big island.



We arrived around lunch time in Hilo and meet with my aunt.  For lunch we headed over to Cafe 100, one of the places we go at least once. Our last full day on the island of Oahu.  This day we visited the Polynesian Cultural Center.



We ended up arriving a little late so we only visited 3 of the 6 "island" areas; Samoa, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and Tonga.  We missed going to Fiji, Tahiti, and Hawaii.  In Samoa, we saw how they make fire, use coconuts, and a guy climb a coconut tree. Because of the new regulations and fees being implemented by the airlines, we decided to pack less clothing so we would have a smaller number of luggage bags to check. Most of the day was spent walking here and there. The third day of vacation saw us attend the Ihori family reunion, the main purpose for us going to Hawaii.  My mom is the coordinator for the event so she was rather busy and I tried to help where I could.

My mom arrived at my appartment the evening before so we could travel together to Seatac and fly out to Honolulu, HI.  Our flight did not leave until 5:20 pm (done on purpose so I could sleep in a bit and not have to wake up before 4:00 am).



We landed in Hawaii at about 8:30 pm local time (11:30 back in Washington).  We got our rental car and headed to the hotel. I borrowed a spare video card from work today and when I got home I plugged it into my computer and everything worked!  So I hurried out the door and drove to Silverdale to pick up a new part for my aging computer from Best Buy.

Well, my computer is still down but in the mean time I have setup my really old computer (300 MHz) as a web server.  I posted earlier about installing linux on the computer and having lots of problems, which was close to a year ago.

Last night, Tristan was over and we were playing WoW for a
few minutes. Then all of a sudden my computer monitor went wonky and
turned all purple. I turned off the computer and restarted it. Again, a
purple screen.



It seems that my
computer is down for the count at the moment. I am not sure if the
problem is with the video card or the mother board's video capability.

The last week had been rather busy.  I found out that my Aunt Violet, who is visiting from Hawaii, would be visiting me over the weekend.  This was late Tuesday evening.  My apartment was a mess and I knew she would criticize a lot of things so I decided to do a major clean up.  I spent most of my free time on Wednesday and Thursday cleaning and they arrived on Friday.

Before my trip to San Diego, CA a horrible thing happened.  My iPod died.

Before heading off to San Diego, CA last week I ended up brushing up on my Ray Tracing knowledge since one of the meetings was with some very informed people on the subject.  I dusted off my notes from school and started to code up a Ray Tracer in C#.

I arrived back from San Diego last night.  Overall the trip went well.  Although I spent more time at the airport than in meetings.  The flight back home was very nice since it was clear skies out and I got to take a couple of pictures. Work has me traveling again.  This will be the third trip that I go on and this time it's back to San Diego.  It will be short since I leave tomorrow in the afternoon and am back home Wednesday.

I went home for lunch and was flipping through the channels and I noticed that some things had changed.  I got really confused.



I wandered over to TV Guide listings online, and sure enough the channels that are available were modified.  Lots of new things were added like Comedy Central and Food Network (one of my favorite shows is Good Eats, a sort of mix between cooking and science).  Yay!

I just realized earlier today that I have now been working at my current job at Mobilisa as a software engineer for almost two years.  I hunted around in my boxes of filed papers and found the acceptance letter.  I started on June 27, 2005.  So it is just over 2 years.



Boy, time sure has gone by fast.



I almost did not end up working there. Nothing too exciting has been going on with me lately, but I thought I would post a little project that I started yesterday.



At work we use Microsoft's SQL Enterprise Manager to update and change the databases we use.  One of the neat features is the ability to open a table and do "live" edits to the data without having to write SQL Statements to perform additions, updates, and deletes.

As I mentioned earlier, I have been working on a little web based application to calculate the distances between airports.









Well, I finished the beta version and put it up on my website.  There is not a lot of features yet, but there is a nice hook into Google Maps.

A bunch of stuff has been happening to me recently.  A lot of it I do not really want to put online since it is not that interesting.  So instead I decided to start writing a journal.  I am on day two.  Actually, today is the first day but I added an entry for yesterday.

My whirlwind business trip around the country finished with me arriving at my apartment in Port Hadlock after 1:00 in the morning on Saturday.



Overall the trip was okay.  Not as productive as I was hoping, but it went well.  One downside was the flight from San Diego to Washington D.C. Today I am off to San Diego, California for a meeting tomorrow morning.  The flight takes off around 5:30pm.



And that is not all...  Tomorrow we leave San Diego for Washington D.C. to catch a plane at 2:30 or so and land around 1:00 in the morning East Coast time.  Meeting on Thursday and one on Friday than finally head back home.

I was driving home from work wondering what to have for dinner yesterday evening.  Then I remember I had a meal that has been in my freezer for many many weeks from a service called Dinners Ready. I have just updated my Photo Album site. For the past few weeks I've been spending a bunch of my free time playing around with PHP and applied some of this knowledge to my photo albums.



One of the new features include a calendar that allows you to view albums by month and by day.  This was one of the harder ones and is not 100% completed. I went to Longview, WA this weekend for a birthday celebration and to show my mother the new car.



I left right after work on Friday and arrived in the late evening.  On Saturday, I went down to Beaverton, OR and did some shopping at Uwajimaya.  Uwajimaya is an oriental store that sells a lot of Japanese, Chinese, Thai, etc... types of foods and house wares. In celebration of this time of the year, I apparently purchased myself a 2007 Toyota Rav4 as a birthday present.  Yep, today is the day that I was brought into this world in Honolulu, Hawaii back in 1981.

Well, I picked up my new 2007 Toyota Rav4 today!  Things did not go exactly as I expected, but it was smooth overall.







I wrote up a little time line to recap the events that occurred.



There is also a new photo album up.  I will hopefully take more pictures tomorrow since by the time I arrived home there was not much sun light left.

I added a new photo album of cars.  Included are pictures of my old vehicle that I took to preserve my memories.  The other photos are of those that I looked at while searching for a new car.  At the end are pictures of my new car right off the truck.



Tomorrow I go to get my new car.  Tristan is going to pick me up at the rental car place and then take me to the dealer.  How exciting!

To start off my car hunt, I decided to get a rental car so I could go around to different dealers and look at what was being offered.  Ryan was nice and drove me over to Poulsbo to get the rental.



Afterwards, I headed down to the Toyota dealership in Bremerton, WA (Heartland Toyota) and checked out the Rav4.  I did a test drive of two different versions (the basic and the sport).

So I called the repair shop yesterday and they had bad news, which is what I expected.  The guy looked at my car and it appeared to him that it was a blown head gasket or maybe a crack in the head.  He also mentioned that the car has a specialized motor or something.  In all, he was estimating the cost to be $3,000 to fix it. I decided to go over to Silverdale today for some shopping.  Along the way, I noticed that all of a sudden my car was emitting a white smoke from the exhaust.



I pulled over at a gas station on the other side of the Hood Canal bridge.  The smoke was rather bad, hopefully I didn't damage anything.  I then called AAA.



45 minutes later a tow truck came and picked me up. Today I got the opportunity to go out in the field and do some testing for one of our projects with the Washington State Ferries.



We headed out a little after noon and carried our equipment on board the Klickitat ferry going from Port Townsend to Keystone.  We maneuvered towards the front of the vessel and went to the employees only section and up the narrow stair and outside. Tonight I had the gang from work over for pizza from Ferino's and a movie.  We watched Big Trouble Little China which I had never seen. What an odd film!

Tonight, I finally completed the entire game of the New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS.  The game is a throw back to the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and is a side-scroller.



It took me a while to reach 100% since each level contained three star coins to try to discover.  Some of these coins took me multiple passes until I found them all. I recently caught a really neat commercial the other day.  I waited to post this until I found a copy of it online.  Apparently it debuted on January 6 and I could not find it on the net when I saw it the following day until now.  (Surprising to me since it seems like things are usually placed online rather quickly, go figure)



What makes this commercial great? Once again, there is some rather bad weather heading our way in the Puget Sound area.  The wind was rather strong as we looked out the windows at work.  The trees were being pushed this way and that.



When I finally left work around 6:30, I noticed that power was out as I headed into Port Hadlock.  I figured power would be out at my place. Tonight was the Seahawk's first playoff game.  What a crazy few hours.



It didn't look like they were going to win, but by some miracle they pulled off a 21-20 win thanks to a slip up on the winning field goal.  The hawks didn't play that well, but at least they are moving on.

Recently, Ryan sent me a little clip (that he was forwarded from Kevin) from Saturday Night Live on Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy.  The skit is about an annoying computer technician and how he is rude to the other employees when they ask for his help.

Today I went over to Ryan's place and helped pull some speaker wires.  His sister, Jessie, and her husband, Rick, were also there so I got to meet them for the first time.  It went rather quickly and smoothly.  It was nice to get out of the appartment for a bit.



Afterwards, we went to Macadoos.  Yum!

Today at work, I received a few more early Christmas Presents.



Steve, a senior programmer at Mobilisa, had a white elephant type gift exchange for the rest of us software engineers.  I ended up with a rather nice hot chocolate set that included two mugs and mini marshmallows.



Later in the afternoon, Tristan handed out some presents.  I ended up getting a Serenity comic book. I found this little game called plane charter yesterday.  It has an outline of the USA and you are tasked with placing all 50 states.



I didn't do nearly as bad as I had thought I would have.  I ended up getting 42 of the states correctly, although it gets much easier towards the end as you have already placed states.

I finally broke down and bought an iPod Shuffle over the weekend.







One of the reasons for this is that the iPod that I have had for a few years has been acting up (and even broke).  If you move it around while it is playing, often it was "skip" and pause the song.  It's rather annoying.

When I first saw Google Maps, I thought it was really neat.  The user interface was much more intuitive than other online maps that I had used like mapquest since it allowed interactions with clicking and dragging.



One of the features that also stood out to me was it's ability to overlap street maps on top of satellite imagery. My second Christmas party of the year occurred yesterday at the Blood's (Brian Blood is one of my co-workers).  I arrived around 6:15pm and enjoyed a lot of food and sweets.  A lot of families showed up with their young children including Cory Fisher from work and his family.



Later in the evening, we had a white elephant gift exchange.  I ended up with a Dr. Laura board game. Yesterday, Ryan had to go to Silverdale to pick up a tux for a wedding he is in this weekend.  Tristan also needed to go to buy some Christmas presents.  I decided to go along for the ride.



There was a storm warning and there were worries about the Hood Canal Bridge being closed in the evening, but we ended up going anyways.  Tristan ended up driving.

Today was the company Christmas party.  Good times were had by all and lots of family were on hand for the celebrations.



The festivities started Monday when people started to arrive from the Washington D.C. office.  Tristan brought in some apple cider and there were also doughnuts.



Today we had the annual secret santa gift exchange. So my mom is visiting me and she brought her computer, which she usually does.



I hadn't been using my wireless network, so I had turned it off (unplugged it) to save some power for the last month.  Well, when I fired it back up, her laptop would not connect to the network.



Arg!  I have it secured and that seemed to be the cause of the main problems.



I did finally get it working. I saw the new James Bond movie, Casino Royal, tonight.  It has been playing in PT, so no long drive to see it, which was nice.



It was good, better than what I had originally thought when I first heard about the movie.  There were a lot of twists and longer than I was expecting.

As I had posted earlier I have been reading The Lord Of The Rings trilogy of books after enjoying the movies.



On Saturday I read the final 100+ pages of the last installment, Return of the King.  Its ending is rather different than the movie and was rather enjoyable.  I'm not sure which I really enjoyed more, the movies or the books. Well, it has taken me a while but I have finally updated my photo albums.



I have changed from using static pages that I created by hand to a dynamic system that pulls data out from a database.  This is still in development, so sorry if there are any problems(there is still a bunch of work I want to do, but it is a start). I have been spending time for that last few weeks working on making different robots with my Lego Mindstorms kit.  Well, this hobby all started thanks to a course that I took during my last quarter at Western Washington University.  This was the graduate level robotics course.

I'm continuing my fun with Legos and building more robots using the Mindstorms Robotics Invention System 2.0 kit.  My latest constructions are a robot that can walk and another than can climb over obstacles.



Both of these models are from Joe Nagata's Lego Mindstorms Idea Book. A few weeks ago, Tristan announced to us at work that he proposed to his girlfriend Amanda.  Yesterday was their engagement party.

Well, there hasn't been any more snow, but some of it did melt yesterday afternoon and it turned to ice over night.  Because of the slick roads it's rather dangerous to drive and we got the day off from work.  It's a nice 18° F right now.  burrrrr

When I arrived back in Port Hadlock yesterday afternoon, I was taken aback by how cold it was.  Well, apparently it was cold enough for snow!




I woke up this morning, looked outside, and there was snow falling.  I'm very surprised.  It's a slushy snow/rain mix and not sticking to the roads, so that is good. Tonight, Tristan and I headed over to Ryan's place to play the brand new video game console from Nintendo that was released yesterday, the Nintendo Wii.




Unlike other video game system, the Nintendo Wii uses a motion sensing controller to control the characters on screen.  Ryan ended up camping out at a Fred Meyer to buy the system at midnight.



I'm amazed at how well the idea works. As I mentioned earlier, I recently passed a Microsoft exam.  Since I passed, I am now an MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional).  I went online afterwards and ordered a Microsoft Welcome kit.  Well, it arrived today.



Included is a lettered signed by Bill Gates!  Well, at least a copy of his signature.  The kit also contained a pin (shown) and an id card.

This weekend I went to Silverdale, WA for some shopping.  While I was there, I bought a couple CDs.  I have been meaning to get them for a while and finally purchased them.  The Beach Boy's "Pet Sounds" from 1966 and the new releases from Weird Al Yankovic and Everclear.




Weird Al's "Straight Outta Lynwood" is very good.  It's a dual disc and contains a bunch of music videos on DVD. This evening I was doing in laundry and in the apartment's laundry room I found 95.78 cents.



Okay, so how do I get a fraction of a cent?  Foreign currency of course!  In the washing machine was a penny and a nickle.  The drier contained a dime.  And on top of the coin slot for the drier was a coin that I had never seen before.




I had no idea where the coin was from. Today I found out the sad news that my old baby sitter, Mrs. Boehl, had passed away at the age of 96.




She took care of my as a baby while my mom was working and looked after me along with many other kids through my early years in elementary school from what I remember.  I have many found memories of her and the fun times I had with the other children.

During my trip up to Bellingham, WA the gang had breakfast at the "OCB" (Old Country Buffet) at the Bellis Fair mall.  While there, we noticed a store called Glowgolf.  Zach told us that it was a mini-golf course in the 'dark' where things glowed.

This weekend I went with my co-workers Tristan and Ryan up to Bellingham, WA for a pumpkin carving party.  The gathering was hosted at Amanda's appartment.







The visit up to Bellingham marks the first time that I have been there since I graduated in June 2005.  Not much has really changed.



Good times were had by all and seven of the nine people ended up cutting up a pumpkin. My favorite TV show of all time is Futurama.  It was cancelled in 2003 and aired on Fox.  To my surprise though, it has been picked up by Comedy Central and is slated to start up again next year!



Since it has been off the air, I bought the complete series on DVD.  I have also been snatching up any memorabilia that I could find related to Futurama like comic books, magnets, and coasters.
